Double eyelid update...
Those of you who have been reading my ramblings for a while will remember my rantings about my SIL and MIL`s obsession with my niece`s eyelids and whether they are double or single. Well nature`s jury has come in with the decision that they are remaining single eyelids (for now at least) and they both seem to be terribly disappointed about this fact. I am, as usual completely indifferent because I think my niece is pretty cute regardless of how many eyelids she does or doesn`t have. I am relieved however that the constant discussion/ cries of "oh look, it`s a double eyelid" and "oh no, it`s gone back to a single eyelid" will stop. I am a little sad that my SIL commented about how disappointed she was (as I had always thought she had more common sense than that.) I was however completely appalled by my MIL`s comment that "Oh well, she can always have an operation later in life.." HUH!?!?! She is 10 months old, is it really necessary to start sewing seeds of dissatisfaction with appearance/ a need for plastic surgery!?! I am sure it is a terrible disappointment to my MIL that both her DILs have the desired "double" eyelids whereas both her grandkids have inherited the "single" eyelid gene!
I know I am letting myself in for lots more hits from searches involving eyelids and eyelid surgery but I guess my blog is the only outlet I have for the frustration I feel about the idiocy of the eyelid thing. My husband refuses to listen to my rants as he says "it is impossible for me to understand where they are coming from because I have big eyes and double eyelids." This may be true but I have plenty of my own complexes but you don`t get me making snarky comments about how it is a shame my son inherited my high instep or small ears. Every little way in which my son resembles me or my husband is a source of joy in my book.

Midori, you know I was going to write a post about something along these lines as well. I'm planning on writing it this week when I have more time. From what I'll say now and since this is in the comment section I guess I should keep it as short as possible. Otherwise we could always email eachother back and forth about it which I don't mind either. All I was say, is I agree with you 100%. I don't understand the eyelid thing and there are a few other things along these lines that I quite frankly just don't get either.
Joey is beautiful! You know that! You are right in your thinking. Eyelids in the grand scheme of things don't matter one bit!
i don't understand the eyelid thing either. a japanese-american girl in my high school had the surgery, but then it was only for one eye and it practically blocked her vision, so in that respect it was neccessary.
also, my son seems to have a double eyelid (though no one said anything except my husband, just after hiro was born. LOL he had to look and ask, 'does he have your eyes??').
as for ears...LOL i have small ears and i LOVE them! small ears ok in my book!
before you think i didn't get the point, i did, and i think you just may become your niece's favorite person, because you will love her and tell her how beautiful she is no matter what.
I am lost...why would two be better than one in this case??
I think my sweet 1/4 Japanese daughter has only one! shocking! hehe However, my halfer husband has the two eyelid thing and I had no IDEA!!! I am so observant!!
As Illahee wrote, it's a good thing your niece will have you around in the future to be a voice of sanity when her mom and grandma are making her feel defective because she has single eyelids. This obsession with eyelids is crazy, isn't it?!
The fascination might be a cultural thing. My brother studied Anatomy for a year at University and he tells me that 50% of Asians naturally have double eyelids, the rest have single. Some even have one of each (my friend is like this, who is 100% Chinese, looks quite unusual although hard to notice).
So maybe in some Asian cultures whenever a child is born the eyes might be a source of curiosity because it is based on luck, a bit like European eye colours perhaps.
Although why your MIL views double as superior to single is anyone's guess.
